Moving After a Divorce or Separation: Practical Help for a Hard Stretch

October 8, 2026  ·  Indy Tote Goat

Nobody finds us because they were hoping to move after a divorce or separation. If you're reading this, you're probably tired, stretched thin, and dealing with more logistics than anyone should have to handle in a hard season. We can't fix the hard part. What we can do is make the packing part simpler, so it takes up less of your energy. Here's how we'd approach it.

Start With What Has to Happen First

You don't have to decide everything at once. Most of what's in the house can wait. What can't wait is the short list: where you'll sleep, what you'll wear, and the paperwork and medications you need nearby. Build the move around that list first, and let the rest be a project for later. A move like this often comes with a short timeline, and giving yourself permission to do it in stages takes real pressure off.

Check What's Yours to Move Before You Pack

We're movers, not lawyers, so we won't tell you what belongs to whom. If an attorney, a mediator, or a written agreement covers what leaves the house, follow that before anything goes in a tote. When you do pack, take quick photos of what you're taking and keep a simple list. Totes help here because each one is a single, countable unit, and that makes it easy to show exactly what left and what stayed.

Need to move out on a short timeline? We deliver commercial-grade totes free throughout Hamilton County and north Indianapolis, so you can start packing right away.

Pack by Person and by Room, and Label Plainly

When a household is becoming two, the cleanest system is to pack by room and put a name on every tote. Write the room and the owner on the outside, along with a few words about what's inside. Plain labels mean nobody has to open a tote to figure out where it goes, and they keep a stressful week from turning into a series of small arguments. Keep a numbered list of totes alongside your photos so you always know what's where.

If One of You Is Leaving Quickly

Pack a first-week tote before anything else. Put in clothes, toiletries, chargers, medications, and the documents you'll need, and keep it with you instead of loading it with the rest. After that, work through the house one room at a time. Delivery goes to the home you're leaving and pickup happens at the new place, as long as both are in our service area. If each of you is moving, you can each reserve your own totes, so there's no sharing and no scheduling around each other.

Kids Have Two Homes Now

If children are part of the move, small things matter more than they seem. Let them pack a tote of their own favorites, and make sure the comfort items, the bedding, and the stuffed animal come over first. Set up their bed before anything else at the new place. Our guide to moving with kids covers more of this, and it applies whether they're living with you full time or splitting their week.

It's Okay to Go Slow on the Rest

Not everything has to be sorted right now. If you're not sure about an item, put it in a tote and decide later. When you're ready to make decisions, our guide to decluttering and downsizing before a move can help you let go of things without second-guessing every one. Our pricing page lays out two-week and four-week rentals, so pick the length that gives you room to breathe, and check how many totes you'll need if you're unsure about the count.

Let Someone Help You Carry It

If a friend or family member has offered to help, say yes. Give them a specific job, like packing the kitchen or loading the car, so they're useful and you're not stuck managing them. Having another person in the room can make the hardest closets and drawers easier to get through. Uniform totes help too, since helpers can stack and carry them without asking you where everything goes, and that saves your energy for the decisions only you can make.

What If You're Moving Out of the Area?

Delivery and pickup stay local, but the totes can travel with you. If you're relocating to be near family or start fresh somewhere else, the totes can ride along and return empty for pickup here. If you have more time than you expected, our 8-week moving checklist can help you pace the work.

Ready to take one thing off your plate? Free delivery and pickup, sturdy totes, and no boxes to break down afterward.
